3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda
3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda: Murakaza neza! Welcome from Hail Tours Rwanda. As your dedicated local tour operator specializing in Rwanda’s primate experiences, we take pride in delivering authentic, seamless, and responsible safaris in Volcanoes National Park.
We work closely with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to secure permits, employ experienced local guides and trackers, and ensure every detail supports conservation and community development.
Our team lives in the region and knows the Virunga Mountains intimately, allowing us to create meaningful journeys that go beyond standard tours.
This 3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda package is one of our most popular short safaris. It is ideal for time-conscious travelers who want maximum primate impact: one unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas and one energetic session with golden monkeys, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes.

- Mountain Gorilla Permit: USD 1,500 per person (international visitors) for one full hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Best Time to Visit
- Peak/Dry Seasons (June–September & December–February): Easier trails, better photography.

Physical & Trekking Rules
- Gorilla groups are limited to 8 visitors per day.
- Maintain 7 meters distance, no flash photography, no eating, drinking, or sneezing near the primates.
- Trek duration: 1–8 hours round-trip for gorillas (variable based on group location); 2–4 hours for golden monkeys.
- Armed rangers and trackers accompany every trek for safety.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate if coming from an endemic country.
- Malaria prophylaxis strongly recommended.
- Travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is mandatory.
- Altitude can cause mild headaches or fatigue — we advise hydration and inform us of pre-existing conditions. Our guides are first-aid trained.
- COVID or other health protocols: We monitor and advise on current requirements.

Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa on arrival at Kigali Airport or through the easy e-visa system. East African Community citizens enjoy simplified entry.

Detailed 3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Scenic Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Our Hail Tours Rwanda representative will greet you at Kigali International Airport with a warm smile, bottled water, and full assistance.
If your flight arrives early, we can include a short but impactful Kigali city tour visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial (a moving testament to Rwanda’s history and resilience) and a local craft market for souvenirs.
Enjoy a beautiful 2.5–3 hour drive northwest through Rwanda’s iconic terraced hills, tea plantations, banana groves, and traditional villages. Arrive at your chosen lodge in the Kinigi/Musanze area with spectacular views of the Virunga Volcano chain. Check in, relax, and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring fresh Rwandan dishes.
Evening: Detailed briefing about your upcoming treks.
Accommodation: Selected lodge (Full Board)
Meals: Lunch / Dinner
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking + Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
The absolute highlight! Early breakfast followed by a short transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for the mandatory briefing (around 7:00–7:30 AM). Rangers will assign you to a suitable habituated gorilla group.
Your trek takes you through bamboo forests, giant Hagenia trees, and open meadows. With trackers ahead, you’ll locate the family and spend one magical hour in their presence — watching a silverback chest-beat, juveniles play, mothers care for infants, and the group forage. The emotional connection is profound; many guests describe it as life-changing.
Return to the lodge for a hearty lunch and afternoon rest. Later, we visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (also known as the Gorilla Guardians Village).
This award-winning community project employs former poachers and offers interactive experiences: traditional Intore dancing and drumming, spear throwing, learning about medicinal plants, and exploring a replica traditional homestead. It provides sustainable income and strong local support for conservation.
Accommodation: Same lodge (Full Board)
Meals: All included
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking + Return to Kigali
After breakfast, head back to the park for Golden Monkey tracking. These beautiful, endangered primates are endemic to the Virungas. The trek is usually shorter and more active (2–4 hours) through bamboo zones.
Watch large troops leaping acrobatically through the trees, playing, and feeding — their shimmering golden-orange coats are stunning in the light. Sightings are highly reliable.
Return for lunch at the lodge. We then drive you back to Kigali (approx. 2.5–3 hours). Depending on your departure flight, we can add a short stop for last-minute shopping or viewpoints. Our team will assist you at the airport with a heartfelt farewell: “Murakoze cyane!”
End of 3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Rwanda Safari.
