Detailed itinerary for the 1 Day Ngamba Island Tour for Chimpanzees
Start your 1 Day Ngamba island tour with a walk to the pier, at the shores of Lake Victoria (in Uganda Wildlife Education Center) for a briefing by the local guide.
Ngamba Island is one of the Lake Victoria islands holding this very important sanctuary, home to the rescued chimpanzees. It is approximately 17 miles off-shore from Entebbe and is home to about 50 habituated chimpanzees, rescued from all parts of the country. The Sanctuary is a Center for care and chimpanzee rehabilitation, with 50 vegetation types that the Great Apes consume.
Start the boat cruise on Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of viewing chimpanzees feeding.
You will also enjoy views of reptiles especially monitor lizards, species of birds, and endless photographic opportunities. This one Uganda wildlife tour will be a full-day tour and because of this, the boat will leave at about 9:00 am.
Departing from Entebbe, the speedboat takes 45 minutes to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary while the motorized canoe will take about one hour and 30 minutes to get to the site.
On getting to the sanctuary, you will be ushered to the visitor’s center where one of the guides will introduce you to the project, its history, the number of chimpanzees as well as their plight.
Go through the personal orientation by a chimpanzee caregiver and get the chance to view the chimpanzees’ feeding process from the visitors’ raised platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence.
However, you can choose to get your hands dirty by joining the feeding team. It is exciting to be part of the chimpanzee feeding sessions. Afterward, enjoy lunch at the Ngamba Island tented Camp and go for the birding tour. Later embark on the boat and return back to Entebbe. This marks the end of our Uganda primate tour, the 1 day Ngamba Tour.
