Having existed since 1962, Kidepo Valley National Park is a remarkable safari destination that currently covers an area of about 144200 hectares and is a hot spot for unique wildlife species that you won’t see in other places of the country like Ostriches, Klipspringers, kudus, cheetahs, pygmy crocodiles, black-backed and side-striped jackals, genets, African golden cats, Caracals, Roan antelopes as well as about 475 species of birds.

Detailed itinerary of the 4 Days Kidepo Wildlife Tour

Day 1: Arrive in Kidepo Valley National Park by road/air from Kampala or Entebbe

To kick-start your 4-day Kidepo wildlife Tour, you will first have to fly or drive to the Northeastern side of the country, where the magnificently incredible Kidepo Valley National Park is found. If using the road, be prepared for 9-10 hours of driving through the countryside but if it is by air, expect 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes.

Pick-up from the Hotel is by 6:00 am to undertake the 9-10 hours transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park with a brief stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola district to track the Rhinoceros in the wild. Receive briefing and immediately start the Rhino tracking adventure before having lunch at Amuka Safari Lodge.

Continue driving while catching a glimpse of the semi-arid vegetation, and rugged terrains as well as sights of different animals that include impalas, Defassa waterbucks, zebras, African bush elephants, Masai giraffes, Ostriches, kudus and bushbucks.

Overnight at;

  • Adere Safari Lodge or Apoka Safari Lodge (luxury).
  • Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp or Kidepo Savannah Lodge (midrange).
  • Apoka Rest Camp (basic).

Meals: Lunch and Dinner.

Day 2: Explore Kidepo Valley National Park: game drive and Karamojong community visit

After an amazing breakfast at the Safari Lodge, you will meet your private safari guide who will offer a briefing on the day’s itinerary, which includes game drives through the wildlife-rich areas of Kidepo Valley National Park and a visit to the nearby Karamojong community.

First on the list is the game drive that begins by 6:00 am to increase chances of catching up with the nocturnal wildlife species such as spotted hyenas, lions, leopards, cheetahs, caracals, serval cats, to mention but a few.

The drive will go through some of the hot spots that include the Narus Valley (known as the Oasis of the Park) with endless sightings of African bush elephants, lions, zebras, cheetahs, Defassa waterbucks, Cape buffaloes, Impalas, bushbucks, Uganda Kobs, warthogs, Oribis, giant elands as well as lots of birds that include Ostriches, Cappatal’s francolin and Karamoja Apalis.

From this game drive, settle for lunch at the Lodge and later make your way to the nearby Karamojong community.

You will be handed over to a local Karamojong warrior who will lead you through the guided community walk in their homesteads (Manyatta), check out their traditional objects and artifacts, be entertained by their invigorating cultural dances and so much more.

Day 3: Another day of exploring Kidepo: Hike Mount Morungole and evening game drive

This day, after breakfast, you will get the chance to explore Kidepo Valley National Park again, Get transferred to the starting point for the Mount Morungole Hike to meet the IK community that occupies its slopes in the southern borders of Kidepo Valley National Park.

Kidepo National Park Animals

Be led by a local guide as you hike to the 2750-meter high mountain in 8 hours (for a round trip) and therefore physical fitness is required. However, be prepared for endless views of the sweeping savannah plains of Kidepo Valley National Park, occasional of monkeys and birds but most interestingly learn from the IK people.

Time and energy permitting, you will enjoy a guided evening game drive that will increase your chances of seeing cheetahs, leopards, Aardwolf, Caracal, lions, striped hyenas, side-striped jackals, caracals and genets and later settle for dinner and overnight.
