Why Double Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi is Unique
The Magic of Mountain Gorillas
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of only four places globally where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild, alongside Mgahinga National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and Virunga National Park (DRC).
With approximately 459 of the world’s 1,063 mountain gorillas, Bwindi is the premier destination for gorilla trekking.
The double trekking experience allows you to observe two distinct gorilla families, each with unique behaviors, social dynamics, and leadership styles, offering a deeper understanding of these endangered primates.
Conservation Impact
Each gorilla permit ($800) directly funds conservation efforts, including anti-poaching patrols, habitat preservation, and community development. By trekking twice, you double your contribution to protecting Bwindi’s gorillas and supporting local livelihoods.
Bwindi’s Biodiversity
Bwindi’s 321 km² of dense rainforest is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting 120 mammal species, 350 bird species (including 23 Albertine Rift endemics), and 400 plant species.
Beyond gorillas, you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, and forest elephants during your treks.
Exploring Lake Bunyonyi: Uganda’s Scenic Gem
Why Visit Lake Bunyonyi?
Located in Kabale district, Lake Bunyonyi is a volcanic lake formed thousands of years ago, known for its 29 islands and lush, terraced hills. Its cool climate (1,962 meters above sea level) and serene waters make it a perfect retreat after gorilla trekking.
The lake’s name, meaning “Place of Little Birds,” reflects its status as a birdwatching haven with over 200 species.
Top Activities at Lake Bunyonyi
- Boat and Canoe Rides: Explore islands like Punishment Island, where unmarried pregnant women were once exiled, and Bwama Island, a former leper colony.
- Birdwatching: Spot species like malachite kingfishers, African fish eagles, and grey-crowned cranes.
- Swimming: The lake is free from bilharzia, crocodiles, and hippos, making it safe for confident swimmers.
- Photography: Capture the lake’s stunning vistas and terraced hills, ideal for nature lovers.
Historical Significance
Lake Bunyonyi’s history includes cultural practices like the use of Punishment Island by the Bakiga people and the establishment of Bwama Island as a leper colony in the 1920s by missionary Dr. Leonard Sharp. Today, it’s a hub for eco-tourism and cultural exchange.
Cultural Encounters: The Batwa Pygmies
The Batwa pygmies, Bwindi’s original inhabitants, lived as hunter-gatherers in the forest for centuries. Displaced to protect the gorillas, they now share their heritage through community tourism. A visit to a Batwa village offers:
- Traditional Demonstrations: Learn about fire-making, hunting, and herbal medicine.
- Cultural Performances: Enjoy music, dance, and storytelling that reflect Batwa traditions.
- Conservation Connection: Understand the balance between human livelihoods and gorilla conservation.
This experience supports the Batwa’s livelihood and preserves their cultural legacy.

Four Trekking Sectors
Bwindi’s four sectors—Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Ruhija—offer diverse trekking experiences. Rushaga and Nkuringo, in the southern part, are ideal for double trekking due to their proximity and multiple gorilla families. Rushaga alone has eight habituated groups, allowing for varied encounters.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
For an even deeper experience, consider a gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga, where you can spend four hours with a gorilla family for $1,500 per permit (not included in this package). Only four people are allowed per group, making it highly exclusive.
